An Age-Friendly Community is a place where people of all ages can live healthy and active later lives. These places make it possible for people to continue to stay in their homes, participate in the activities that they value, and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible.

The World Health Organisation communities framework acts as a guide to this programme and has:

  • UK Network – 50 member places
  • Affiliated to the WHO’s Global Network
  • Supported by the Centre for Ageing Better
  • Regionally sharing good practice
  • Initial City Focus
  • Rural community pilot (Lincolnshire)
  • Now invitations for all

There are eight domains for whole system action which can address barriers to ageing well:

We intend to undertake a four-stage programme cycle which will allow us to engage the community and understand their wants and needs, plan strategically to identify strengths and address weaknesses, evaluate and monitor the progress and outcomes of programme and act and implement on existing plans and scale up on successful action.
